Everest Panorama

Everest Panorama

Camp VI, 27,300 feet, Mt. Everest

One of my favorite images from Everest, this is actually a compilation of 3 shots stitched together in Photoshop's Photomerge plugin.

In 2004, Dave Hahn and I were back on Everest for the third Mallory & Irvine Research Expedition. After a long day of scouring the gully systems of the Yellow Band - at roughly 27,500 feet - we returned to Camp VI on the North Face and were treated to a stunning sunset. Although I was exhausted, the amazing magic light on the mountain, illuminating clearly the famed Northeast Ridgecrest, was too much to resist.

I pulled myself out of the tent, set up a tripod on the rocks outside camp, and took a series of images, bracketing and adjusting exposure to be sure I had the right shots to make the panorama I wanted. My hope was to create an image that showed this famous route in a new light, and fortunately it worked. It continues to be one of my most popular images from fine art customers.
